The Roswell Police Department held a ceremony Thursday to promote members of its department and honor officers for going above and beyond the call of duty.

The department has taken shape once again only weeks after its two top commanders announced their plans to retire. Three officials were promoted during a ceremony hosted by RPD’s interim chief, Dennis Kintigh, who is slated to serve until January.

Roswell Police Department received a call around 6:30 a.m., Wednesday, about a small child wandering down the street alone and crying.

Wild pig danger

Wildlife officials confirmed a case of a dangerous disease found in wild pigs known as “sudden death” that has the potential to devastate cattle populations.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says a feral hog from Eddy County tested positive for pseudorabies. The viral disease lives mostly on feed and in water. It usually doesn’t harm the wild hogs, but can kill cattle, dogs and cats within a day or two of infection.

Elks plan 10-year Sept. 11 memorial

Community members are coming together and paying respects to fallen soldiers and U.S. civilians killed since Sept. 11, saying they plan to host a special memorial in 2011 on the 10-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

The Elks Lodge of Roswell announced Wednesday its plans to set up a memorial of thousands of flags slated to be displayed at New Mexico Military Institute during the Sept. 11, 2011, commemoration. The event, Field of Honor, is being co-hosted by the Colonial Flag Foundation.

Cap and trade unpopular idea

Opponents of two petitions going before a state board that aim at regulating greenhouse gases, voiced their anger over the proposed adoption, Tuesday, at a public hearing in Artesia.

The State Environmental Improvement Board heard testimony from local homeowners and employees of the energy industry, who labeled the petitions as job killers and warned of a bleak future if they were enacted. The hearing drew a crowd of at least 150 about one hour after it began and disgruntled residents directed their comments to a hearing officer and a court reporter. No EIB members attended the meeting; however, they are required to read the transcripts.
